In 1838, the Jesuit Priests of Georgetown University sold 272 enslaved men, women and children to 2 men in Louisiana. Many of the enslaved were placed on plantations in Maringouin (Iberville), Smoke Bend (Ascension)and Houma (Terrebonne). Later, they migrated all over. A number of the GU272 descendants reside in Orleans Parish.
Join us for a gathering of GU272 Descendants as we seek to connect and research our family connections. At this gathering, verified GU272 descendants and those who are still connecting the dots will meet each other and continue their research into their family history. A well sourced family tree is needed to become a member of the GU272 Descendants Association. This event provides descendants with the perfect opportunity to flush out their trees. This even it free but you must register at this link: http://bit.ly/GU272GG
Bring your laptop, family trees, note paper and anything else you might need to work on your family tree and share with other descendants. If you have a library card, you will be able to use the computers at the library and access the Library’s wi-fi. Library cards are free, sign up for one at any library branch. The library has a paid Ancestry.com account available on it’s computers for your use if you have a library card. Also available in the library are the Catholic Church Sacramental records that show births, deaths, marriages and baptisms. These records are helpful in researching family history. We will have a volunteer genealogist available to share the basics of genealogical research as well.
Light refreshments are bring provided by descendants. A list of refreshments is on the registration link. If you would like to contribute something, please note that on your registration. The Friday before the registration, you will be notified of our count.
We will have future gatherings in Iberville, Ascension, Terrebonne and East Baton Rouge parishes.
