In 1838 the Jesuit Priests of Georgetown University sold 272 enslaved men, women and children to two men in Louisiana. Many of these enslaved people were placed on a plantation in Iberville Parish in the town of Maringouin. Others were placed on plantations in Ascension and Terrebonne parishes. Judy Riffel, a Louisiana genealogist working with the Georgetown Memory Project will give a lecture on the sale at the Rosedale library, 15695 Rosedale Road in Rosedale, LA, on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at 2:30 PM.
The GU272 Descendants Association will conduct a “Genealogy Gathering” in Iberville Parish in March. The Genealogy Gathering will be an opportunity for descendants to meet newly discovered relatives and update their family trees as they prepare to submit their application to become a member of the GU272 Descendants Association. Stay tuned for the upcoming March date.
